A legal principle that means getting what is deserved. In the philosophy of punishment, retributivists argue that punishment is a moral imperative—it must be imposed because it is deserved. Just deserts is a specification of this philosophy and requires that the punishment should fit the crime and offenders should get neither more nor less than they deserve.
