  • A legal term by which a person voluntarily agrees to an action or procedure based on the understanding of the presented facts and background underlying that action or procedure. In social science research, it is a legal and ethical requirement to obtain informed consent from a participant before he or she can participate in experimental research. The purpose of informed consent is to protect participants from harm.
