Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA)
A federal program, created in 1997 and updated in 2004, to authorize funding of education for children with disabilities. To qualify under IDEA, a child must meet the following three criteria: (1) the child must meet one or more of the categories of impairment included in IDEA, (2) the child's impairment(s) must be severe enough to adversely affect his or her educational performance, and (3) the child's impairment(s) must require special education and related services.
