Graphic Violence
As with many qualitative judgments affecting media, a clear definition of graphic violence is elusive. It is perhaps safe to say that what constitutes violence on the screen is measurable against real life. One is, in effect, recognized by the other. For instance, children do not typically regard cartoons or video games as disturbingly violent, in part because these are seen as standing at a tangible remove from real life. On the other end of the spectrum, children appear more likely to be disturbed by media representations of real-life violence, as in news reports, than by violent drama.
