  • The genetic makeup of an organism (often referred to as our “genetic blueprint”), specifically the allelic composition of an organism or cell. For organisms that reproduce sexually, the DNA structure is inherited from both the organism's parents. For asexual organisms, it is a direct copy of the DNA of the parent. The genotype regulates the organism's formation from production of protein molecules to metabolic synthesis and determines the expression of a trait (phenotype).
