  • Although often easy to recognize, this term is surprisingly hard to define. This may be due to the many types of abuse, which all center around the cruel treatment of a person or animal. When a father hits his child or a husband his spouse, few objective observers will likely argue against the existence of abuse. Considerably more nebulous is the concept of emotional abuse. Using words to demean or humiliate another individual may be seen as personally cruel, but at what line this becomes abusive can be considerably difficult to determine.
