Social identity theory deals with how we make sense of ourselves in relation to a group to which we belong vs. one that is different from or foreign to us. Social identity establishes the connection between the self, our sense of self-worth, and group identity. It is often in this process of identifying ourselves with a group that we stereotype or alienate those that we constitute as different, or "others", thus creating a polarization where oftentimes our own sense of self-esteem is predicated on our perception of difference and superiority.
