Abstract

This four volume set spans all areas of cross-cultural psychology, with particular emphasis on those areas in which the acclaimed editors, Peter Smith and Deborah Best, consider to have experienced the most recent progress, namely developmental psychology, personality, and social psychology. Cross-cultural psychology is a young field but with a global research that encompasses many facets of psychological behavior, essentially anything at the interrelationship of psychological processes and culture at an individual, social, and developmental level.

This set of four volumes provides a concise overview of research into cross-cultural aspects of psychology. The 72 articles that are reprinted here have been drawn from all areas of psychological investigation. In this chapter, we provide some introductory explanations as to reasons why we have selected the particular papers that have been included. We also discuss how we see the work that is described in them as illuminating what has already been achieved and what are some of the promising areas for further development. Fuller explorations of the issues that we touch on here can be found in recent textbooks (Smith, Bond, & Kagitcibasi, 2006; Chiu & Hong, 2006; Heine, 2008; Rogoff, 2003).
