Introduction to congressional elections

Americans elect a new congress on the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November of even-numbered years. Early the following January the elected representatives and senators begin their first session of that Congress. Those elected November 4, 2014, for instance, were sworn in January 3, 2015, the opening day of the 114th Congress. They included many new faces: thirteen new senators and fifty-eight new representatives.
