Population Growth
Population growth and the public policies surrounding international population assistance have been fervently contested in the United States for more than three decades. This is not a technical nor scientific debate: Neither the population projections or demographic techniques used to develop them are in question. Few question the efficacy of modern birth control methods. Instead, the controversy is about how to address population growth (see the “Birth Control” chapter).
The major means employed to deal with population growth are promoting contraceptive use, permitting the safe practice of induced abortion, and raising the status of women.
