This chapter and the next explores how the French people think and act politically. It starts with a discussion of how the French have become ever more like their counterparts in other industrial democracies in the nearly half century since the creation of the Fifth Republic. But it also examines the complicated world of French political parties and elections, which is in some ways very different from what we find in other democracies.
