Political Status: Sovereign state in free association with the United States (which retains authority with regard to defense) since October 21, 1986.
Area: 70 sq. mi. (181 sq. km).
Population: 53,000 (2016E—UN); 73,376 (2016E—U.S. Census). It is estimated that more than 22,000 of the Marshellese citizens reside in the U.S. territory of Guam or elsewhere in the United States.
Major Urban Center (2014E—UN): Majuro (31,000).
Official Languages: Marshallese. English is also widely spoken.

President: Hilda C. HEINE (ind.); elected on January 27, 2016, by the House of Representatives to succeed Casten HEMRA (ind.), who was elected on January 4, 2016, but left office following a vote of no confidence on January 26.
