Situated at the geographical heart of Europe, the Czech Republic consists of about 60 percent of the area of the former Czechoslovak federation. It is bounded by Slovakia on the east, Austria on the south, Germany on the west, and Poland on the north. Incorporating the old Czech “crown lands” of Bohemia and Moravia (plus part of Silesia), the country has a population that is 90.4 percent Czech; small ethnic minorities include Moravians, Slovaks, Poles, Germans, Roma (Gypsies), and Hungarians (Magyars). The inhabitants are to a large extent nominally Roman Catholic but encompass a sizable Protestant minority. Women comprise 44 percent of the paid workforce in the Czech Republic.
