Note: On May 1, 2012, thousands of frustrated Maldivians peacefully assembled in the capital, Malé, to protest the government’s management of the Maldives’ economy, specifically, its decision to reset the value of the Rufiyaa, which raised commodity prices by 20 percent. The people’s list of grievances expanded in the coming months, and clashes between demonstrators and the police became more violent. President Mohamed Nasheed began to order arrests of political oppositionists in December. Chief Judge of the Criminal Court Abdulla Mohamed declared the arrests unconstitutional on January 15, and President Nasheed ordered the arrest of Justice Mohamed himself on January 16.
