Note: On February 21, 2012, eurozone finance ministers chose to provide a substantial financial bailout package to Greece. Eurozone will pump 130 billion euros into Greece’s economy and attempt to cut its debt from 160 percent of GDP to 121 percent by 2020. This is the second financial bailout Greece has received in two years, the first of which came in May 2010––a 110 billion euro bailout.
Political Status: Gained independence from the Ottoman Empire in 1830; military rule imposed following coup of April 21, 1967; civilian control reinstituted July 23, 1974; present republican constitution promulgated June 11, 1975.
