Note: Following weeks of continuous demonstrations, President Mubarak resigned February 11, 2011. The Supreme Council of the Armed Forces, headed by Mohammad Hussein Tantawi, dissolved parliament and suspended the constitution February 13. On March 19 a constitutional referendum was adopted that reduced the powers of the presidency, including the imposition of a two-term limit. In July a new electoral law changed the manner in which elections for the People's Assembly were conducted. In three rounds of parliamentary elections, including subsequent runoff balloting, beginning November 28, 2011, and ending January 11, 2012, Islamist parties won a majority of the 498 elected seats (the military appointed an additional 10 seats).
