    Political Status: Gained independence (as Western Samoa) on January 1, 1962; member of the Commonwealth since 1970; current name adopted in 1997; under mixed political system approximating a constitutional monarchy.

    Area: 1,089 sq. mi. (2,821 sq. km).

    Population: 196,000 (2018 World Bank); 201,316 (2018—U.S. Census).

    Major Urban Center (2018—World Population Review): APIA (38,000).

    Official Languages: English, Samoan.

    Monetary Unit: Tala (market rate October 19, 2018: 2.66 tala = $1US).

    Head of State: Afioga Tuimalealiifano Va’aletoa SUALAUVI II; elected by the Legislative Assembly and installed for a five-year term on July 21, 2017, succeeding Tui Atua TUPUA Tamasese Taisi Efi.
