    Political Status: Independent parliamentary republic proclaimed November 26, 1941, with acquisition of de facto autonomy completed upon withdrawal of French troops in December 1946.

    Area: 4,036 sq. mi. (10,452 sq. km).

    Population: 6,094,000 (2018E—World Bank); 6,100,075 (2018E—U.S. Census).

    Major Urban Centers (2018E—World Population Review): BEIRUT (2,385,000), Tarabulus (Tripoli, 850,000), Saida (Sidon, 207,500), Tyre (178,920).

    Official Language: Arabic (English and French are widely spoken).

    Monetary Unit: Lebanese Pound (market rate October 19, 2018: 1,507.50 pounds = $1US).

    President: Michel AOUN (Free Patriotic Movement); elected by parliament on October 31, 2016.

    Prime Minister: Saad HARIRI (Tayyar al-Mustaqbal); named prime minister-designate on November 3, 2016, to succeed Tammam SALAM (ind.); nominated for an additional term by the president on May 24, 2018, following legislative elections on May 6.
