  • Edmund G. (Pat) Brown Sr. (1905–96) was born to Edmund and Ida Brown, in San Francisco in 1905. As a young man, Brown was exposed to his father's business of selling entertainment items such as cigars and moving picture devices. His public life began at a young age with a speech at a World War I bond rally. During Brown's early school life, he ran for eleven positions in high school and won all of them. He could not afford college because of his parent's lack of funds, so he went in to business with his father until finances allowed him to complete his education.
