  • Janice K. (Jan) Brewer (1944–) has been active as a Republican in state politics in Arizona for almost twenty years. She became governor of Arizona on January 21, 2009, upon the appointment of then-governor Janet Napolitano to the post of U.S. secretary of homeland security. Brewer was born September 26, 1944, in California, where her father had moved to work at the country's largest navy munitions facility during World War II. She is a graduate of Glendale Community College, in Glendale, Arizona. After her father died in 1955, her mother moved to California and opened a franchise dress shop.
