While Nebraska is known as one of the most consistently conservative states in America, this stability is deceptive. The first eighty years of Nebraska's history were characterized by significant shifts in party allegiance and political philosophy. This fluidity was the result of the same forces that transformed the nation in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries: The slavery debate and Civil War, the tumult that accompanied industrialization, and the Great Depression each left their mark on the eras that followed them.
