  • Austin is the capital of the state of Texas and is located in Travis County in central Texas; it has a current population of roughly 800,000 and is roughly 300 square miles. Mirabeau Buonaparte Lamar, who would become the second president of the Republic of Texas, first envisioned the city of Austin. While he was vice president under Sam Houston, he went buffalo hunting in a place on the Colorado River inhabited by only three families living in a stockade created by Jacob Harrell.
