White supremacy is the theory or belief that white people are innately superior to people of other races. As theory, it has grown from multiple tributaries, including offbeat variants of Christianity, conspiracy theories about Jews, the science of eugenics, and Odinism. Not all those knowledgeable of theories take action on them. However, when white supremacy exists as an ideological belief system, those discerning the theories can convert and have converted them into action frames.
Among the first stirrings of western white supremacy was when a Ku Klux Klan–favored candidate captured the Oregon governor's office in 1923. In 1924, Klan-backed candidates captured Colorado's governorship and U.S. Senate seats.
