Richards, Ann
Ann Willis Richards (1933–2006) served as governor of Texas from 1991 to 1995. Earlier in her career, she served as administrative assistant to the Hon. Sarah Weddington; as county commissioner in Travis County, Texas (1977–85); and as treasurer of the state of Texas (1983–91).
Dorothy Ann Willis was born September 1, 1933, in Lake, Texas, near Waco. Known for her dry wit during her political career, Richards made fun of her rural roots by claiming that her father came from “Bugtussle” and her mother from “Hogjaw.” The Willis family moved to Waco during her teenage years so Richards could attend Waco High School.
