  • The Oglala Lakota (Sioux) war leader and chief called Red Cloud (1822–1909) was born in the early 1820s, probably in 1822. He was chief of the Oglala from 1868 until his death in 1909. He was a capable leader both in war and peace, distinguishing himself in his tactics during war but also in the ensuing peace. The hostilities between the U.S. Army and the Native Americans during 1866 to 1868 are often called Red Cloud's War.

    Red Cloud was born near the forks of the Platte River, near present-day North Platte, Nebraska. His mother, Walks As She Thinks, was Oglala, and his father, Lone Man, was Brulé. By matrilineal tradition, Red Cloud was an Oglala. He grew up honing his fighting skills against the Ute, ...
