Proposition 187 (California, 1994)
Proposition 187 or Save Our State (SOS) initiative was a California ballot measure that was proposed and passed in 1994. Proposition 187 was the start of an anti–illegal immigration movement in the western states of the United States and was designed to curtail services and employment to illegal immigrants.
Proposition 187 had its roots in a faltering economy. Still reeling from the recession of the early 1990s, Californians were looking for areas to cut in their state budget. According to the 1990 Census, the Latino and Hispanic population had increased from 19 percent to 26 percent.
