  • African Americans have long been a part of the ethnic diversity of the American West. Esteban, a Muslim slave and the first African known to be in the West, came ashore near present-day Texas in 1528. Esteban later served with the 1539 Spanish expedition into far northern New Spain. Blacks from the 1541 Coronado expedition remained in New Mexico and Kansas when Coronado returned to Mexico City. By 1570, New Spain had 20,569 blacks and 2,439 mulattos. In 1617, freed slaves founded San Lorenzo de los Negros, the first recognized free black settlement in the new world. Albuquerque in 1750 was one-fourth black or mulatto.
