  • Pollution has long been a contentious issue in the West. Types of pollution include air, water, light, and even noise. Industries involved include mining, energy production, manufacturing, transportation, agriculture, health care, waste disposal, and astronomy. Pollution is manifested in toxic liquids and airborne elements, smog, acid rain, contaminated waterways downstream from pollution sources, and traffic congestion.

    Mining of raw materials in the West is primarily for gold, silver, copper, coal, and uranium. Some of these, such as uranium, are predominantly in the West.
