Phoenix is the largest city in the state of Arizona and is the center of the Phoenix metropolitan area, which is the twelfth-largest metropolitan area in the United States. Both the city and the metropolitan area are large in size and population. The metropolitan area had a population of about 4.4 million people in 2009, covers 2,000 square miles, and is also known as the Valley of the Sun.
