  • California is the thirty-first state in the United States. It lies on the West Coast of the United States and has varied terrain ranging from mountains and forests to deserts to beaches. All these, just a few hours’ drive from each other, make California a major tourist destination. California is also home to several of the United States’ most populous cities, including Los Angeles and San Francisco. These cities vary in population makeup. Most include a mixture of ethnicities, including Caucasian, Latino, and Asian, to name a few. California is currently the most populous state in the nation, which has much to do with the state's expansive land mass—it is third behind Alaska and Texas in land mass.
