  • With nearly four million residents, according to the 2010 United States Census, Los Angeles has the second-highest population of any city in the United States. Located in southwestern California, the City of Los Angeles occupies approximately 470 square miles. Although a relatively new city on the American landscape, Los Angeles has gained several nicknames (both positive and negative): El Pueblo, Southland, La-La land, the Interchange, the Entertainment Capital of the World, the Island on the Land, and LA. Each of these nicknames reveals some truth about the city, but its most popular moniker, the City of Angels, is the one closest to its original name, given to it by the Spanish: “The Town of Our Lady the Queen of the Angels of the Porciúncula River.”
