  • Texas is the second largest state in the union in area (268,820 square miles), behind Alaska, and in population (almost 25 million), behind California. Its population and geography make it among the most diverse of the fifty states and one of the most volatile politically. It borders Louisiana and Arkansas on the east, Oklahoma to the north, and New Mexico to the west. To the southeast lies the Gulf of Mexico, and to the south and southwest is the international border with Mexico.
