  • The U.S. Southwest includes the states of New Mexico, Arizona, and Nevada. In some surveys, Nevada might be included with the Mountain states, but the rapid development of Las Vegas has shifted the economic and political center of the state from the northwest to the far south, which is geographically and economically more closely linked to the Southwestern states than to the Mountain states. Likewise, for credible reasons, Oklahoma, west Texas, and Southern California are sometimes included in discussions of the region. Texas is, however, as much a Southern state as a Western state, and the population growth and economic growth in the eastern half of the state has far outstripped that in the western half.
