1890 Manifesto
The 1890 Manifesto was a press release issued by Wilford Woodruff, the president of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormon, or LDS), which stated that church leaders were performing “no new marriages contrary to the laws of the land.” The federal government accepted this statement as indication that the Mormon Church no longer practiced plural marriage, which helped lead to Utah's admission as a state to the Union.
