  • Denver is Colorado's largest city, the state's capital, and the center of a metropolitan area stretching from Boulder in the north to Castle Rock in the south. In 2010 the city's population was 600,158; its metropolitan area encompassed 2,543,482, or just more than half the state's population. Denver's origins and early development reflect the resource booms of the nineteenth-century West while its contemporary form embodies regional development shaped significantly by federal spending during and after World War II.

    While often associated with mountains, Denver is situated largely in the South Platte River valley, and its official elevation, 5,280 feet above sea level, literally makes it the Mile High City.
