  • The Democratic Party is one of the two current major political parties in the United States, along with the Republican Party. It is the oldest existing political party in the United States, having evolved from Thomas Jefferson's Democratic-Republican Party in the early nineteenth century. It takes socially liberal and economically moderate positions favoring an activist role for the federal government in the economy.

    The Democrats’ position in the western states is a function of the region's diverse political culture. The West's remoteness from the traditional power centers in the East and the spirit of the frontier have spawned an independent, heterogeneous, political environment that generates a strong libertarian streak.
