Bosanquet, Bernard
Bernard Bosanquet was born on July 14, 1848, near Alnwick, Northumberland, England, and died in London on February 8, 1923. He studied at Harrow (1862–67) and at Balliol College, Oxford (1867–70), where he was influenced by Edward Caird and T. H. Green. Upon graduation in 1870, Bosanquet was elected to a Fellowship at University College, Oxford, where he taught logic and the history of moral philosophy. Following the receipt of an inheritance in 1881, Bosanquet gave up teaching and left for London where he became prominent in adult education and social reform. In 1895, he married Helen Dendy, an influential social worker and, later, a principal member of the Royal Commission on the Poor Laws (1905–09).
