As a field, urban politics explores the legislative, executive, and administrative activities of the many forms of government present in most large urban metropolitan areas. Education, housing, economic development, criminal justice, fiscal affairs, transportation, the environment, and health care are only a few areas in which urban governments are active. Political attitudes, partisan identification, and party politics form in part at the local level. As new groups arrive they bring new issues to the political system. Communicating with public officials is a vital part of urban public policy and urban politics.
