Work in the Gig Economy: Pay and Protest at Munchy

Abstract

This case illustrates the variety of challenges and opportunities associated with work in the ‘gig economy’. It highlights the range of different stakeholders and interests that have made gig work a focus of attention and controversy for HR professionals, labour unions, regulators, and the wider public. The case focuses particularly on the labour management practices of digital platform companies and their implications for gig workers’ pay and conditions. Ultimately, the case challenges students to consider strategies for managing conflicts over gig work and devising sustainable human resource management practices for platform companies.
