Abstract

Discussions of rock guitarist Jimi Hendrix usually focus on his rapid ascent to global fame following his mid-1966 relocation to London, England, his sonic innovations, and his tragic death at age 27 on September 18, 1970. Less attention is paid to the business and legal issues and overall mismanagement that plagued his career as a bandleader. Furthermore, those circumstances created serious posthumous consequences that have extended for decades, and are less welcome legacies of Hendrix’s highly influential phase as rock’s premier instrumentalist. This case presents a chronological overview of the complex business circumstances surrounding his career and the subsequent management of his estate, indicating ways in which artist representation in the music industry has evolved since Hendrix’s passing.
