The case can be used as part of a Microeconomics course to illustrate the importance of the consumer demand theory and several of its specific theorems. This particular cases uses the fluctuating price of food as an example to demonstrate how seemingly normal demand functions can be theoretically inconsistent and therefore meaningless.
