One of the greatest challenges in research is the need for uncompromising focus on that which defines and sustains the successful scientist: her or his own science. In a time of unprecedented competition for research funding and unrelenting constraints on time and resources, it is critical to retain this focus. But, such dedication also provides one of academia's greatest anomalies; namely, that outstanding training and reciprocal research mentorship are essential prerequisites to becoming a successful research scientist.
