‘What's the title?’ the editor asked, when I agreed to write this chapter. This became a challenge, which I posed to colleagues, ‘If you had to choose a title to characterise your career, what would it be?’

The book focuses on women's careers, alluding to glass ceilings and discrimination, but I did not want to describe my career in this way. I started work as an academic in the 1970s and I have been helped by the feminist revolution, and the expansion of the university system. Yet, there have been barriers, so I cannot pretend all is well—when it is not. I am a migrant, so maybe the title upside-down would signal changes in my career arising ...
