Working with Written Discourse in Social Research
In Chapter 1 we noted that many research projects which are not specifically about language or discourse nevertheless involve collecting and analysing data in the form of speech or writing. Often, social researchers process these data using some form of content analysis; but we suggested that paying attention to the form of discourse—the linguistic choices people make when they communicate their attitudes, beliefs and experiences—can sometimes produce additional insights. In this chapter, we return to the uses of discourse analysis in social research, and discuss some examples in more detail.
