Increased penetration of profit-making firms directly into medical services and the growth of managed care have resulted in higher levels of external control over health services including hospitals (Robinson, 1996). Use of inpatient settings has been reduced, leading to excess capacity, greater price competition, and financial instability for hospitals (Reinhardt, 1996). Organizational restructuring is widespread as hospitals reposition themselves to survive in a changing environment.
