Mentor in Greek mythology was the teacher of Telemachus, son of Odysseus, who was off being a hero in the Trojan War. Less well-known is that Mentor was actually Athena, the Goddess of Wisdom, in disguise. (Perhaps Athena figured that Telemachus would better attend to her teachings coming from an older man; yes, even goddesses have to work at getting males to pay the right kind of attention!)
