PATTY SMITH, a 17-year-old white girl from a middle-class background, was arrested about 32 hours after killing her father. Police charged her with first-degree murder. Within 24 hours police also arrested four of Patty's friends, ages 17 and 18, and charged them with being accessories after the fact. Three—Mary, Tom, and Jim—were charged for disposing of evidence and withholding knowledge of the crime; the fourth, Joe, for lying to police to provide an alibi for Patty.
