Introduction

The revenues in elite football have increased significantly since the 1990s. The main reason for this is the strong growth in media rights. In 2014, the total global media rights were estimated at $36.8 billion, of which $13.1 billion (36%) was related to football (TV Sports Markets, 2014). Media rights have become the major source of revenue for those at the top of the financial ladder. During the 1997/98 season, the big-five European leagues (England, Italy, Spain, Germany and France) brought in a total of US$894 million.
