After a recent talk, one of us was talking to a state's English Language Arts Coordinator. Her state had dropped writing from its exam because of the expense of scoring it, and so teachers had, she said, stopped teaching it. “The Common Core State Standards will do so much for the kids of this state. They'll finally get to write again.” And she continued with a story about how much her fourth-grade daughter was enjoying having the chance to express herself in the writing she was doing in class.
