In Treating Secondary Victims the author builds upon a foundation of both the research literature on incest victims and families, as well as her own clinical experience to provide a conceptual framework for intervention and treatment of the non-offending mother.

In this chapter, I focus on key dynamics in individual treatment—specifically, the work typically associated with Phases 2 through 6 of the treatment approach introduced earlier. To reiterate, Phase 2 involves early intervention around traumatic effects; Phase 3, strengthening ego capacities; Phase 4, surfacing the traumatic effects; Phase 5, identifying relational consequences; and Phase 6, working through and resolution.
Phase 2: Early Intervention around Traumatic Effects
In the previous chapter, the four traumagenic dynamics of powerlessness, betrayal, stigmatization, and sexual traumatization (Finkelhor & Browne, 1985) were introduced as key issues to assess and prioritize in the mother's treatment. In this chapter, these dynamics are used as a framework for organizing strategies that can be used to shape interventions.
